1. ALS 8/9/1917: "I hear today Cardinal Gibbons has chosen me as one of this two representatives to join the American Red Cross mission to Russia. This would mean two months away but I am not anxious to go, as I am not an American citizen. it appears they want somebody who had known Tolstoi (sic) personally and could not be traduced as a Capitalist and a Czarist! The point of the mission is to distribute enormous supplies and stores as a sort of pourboire to the Russians to go on fighting. However, I have sent word that I am too occupied as it is with writing up the Irish Convention. Sir Horace (Plunkett) relies on me to keep him in touch with the tremors of opinion here and also to keep a cheery propaganda going..."
2. ALS 12/21/1917 re U.S. reaction to the loss of Jerusalem by Turkey to the British on December 9, 1917: "The fall of Jerusalem has probably caused far more ripples in America than in Europe. Strangely enough it gives a number of people their first genuine interest in the war...The fall of Jerusalem offers a miraculous opportunity which rightly used would inspirit the whole Catholic community of America and cut under a very insidious form of German propaganda which has never ceased since I have been in this country..."
